Our Story
Hands of Justice
Hands of Justice was established in August 2017 with a focus on educating and empowering teens in Montgomery County, Texas. The very first meeting brought together eight local youth to learn about human trafficking. Within two months, that number grew to over 40 participants. The group launched impactful awareness campaigns, created posters, led peer education efforts, and collaborated on the production of an educational documentary, The Movement, which aired in spring 2017.

By 2019, the organization began to shift its focus to supporting survivors of domestic sex trafficking. With the guidance of a dedicated Board of Directors and Advisory Council, Hands of Justice identified critical gaps in aftercare services and envisioned a comprehensive approach centered on economic empowerment, long-term support, and survivor-led leadership. This vision laid the foundation for what would become the Economic Empowerment and Resource Center.
At the 2021 Artreach for Freedom Gala, Hands of Justice announced its goal to establish a safe and welcoming space for Overcomers to receive support and build community. Within just five months, a suitable location was secured and program development began—specifically for those not living in residential facilities but still in need of ongoing services.
In July 2022, the Economic Empowerment and Resource Center officially opened its doors, providing tailored, long-term services for both male and female Overcomers of human trafficking.
In May 2022, Hands of Justice collaborated with 20 Overcomers from across the nation to publish When Silence Ends, a powerful anthology amplifying survivor voices.
When Hurricane Beryl struck Southeast Texas in July 2024, the Center sustained significant damage and operations were temporarily displaced. Thanks to a partnership with The WorkLodge in The Woodlands, Texas, Hands of Justice was able to maintain continuity of services and continue supporting clients in need.
In August 2024, the organization published When Silence Ends: Volume 2, in collaboration with 16 Overcomers. The book will be available on Amazon soon.
Later that same month, the organization’s founder stepped down, and in her place, long-time Board Member and Vice President, Dawn Candy, was appointed to lead Hands of Justice into its next chapter of growth and impact. Dawn officially stepped into the Executive Director role on October 28, 2024.
Hands of Justice continues to stand firm in its mission to provide survivors with the tools, support, and opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity and purpose.
